The larger the pool of people
Attempting to acquire a skill
In any given specialty,
The higher the costs of success,
And the longer the odds against
Being anywhere near the best.
The most deeply complex skill sets
Descend to lottery contests
When enough people practice them.
There aren’t niches recessed enough
For everyone to find a nest,
And the species grows desperate.
Massed dreamers turn mean in tandem,
As the outliers grow random.
