The deep appeal of nonsense—
Including conspiracy
Theories, miracles, snake oils,
And cryptozoologies—
Lies in wishing this world weren’t
As this world blatantly is,
And not in nonsense itself.
We can sympathize with this,
Knowing that if all cabals
Were brought to light tomorrow,
Cheap cures found for the worst ills,
Big Foot and Nessie on tour,
Fresh nonsense would bubble up.
This has already happened
For cures and discoveries.
Today you grow frustrated
With living yesterday’s dreams.
Only a true miracle,
A core change in what can be,
Could assuage the desperate
Wish for whatever can’t be,
And that miracle would need
To be the transformation
To permanent contentment
Instead of permanent need.
If the world made perfect sense,
There’d be no need for nonsense.
