It is not humility
To extend the emotions
Of human interactions
To the nonhuman cosmos,
But it seems impossible
Not to—you only know how
To be human to humans,
How to be foolish, grateful,
Curt, or cooperative,
How to feel obligated,
How to not let the side down.
It’s a misplaced competence
To wonder if you’ve done right
Or shown appreciation
For anything not human.
Still, you do it. You feel it,
And you feel the need for it.
What have you done for your world?
