Other Gods

The binoculars have been centered
On the windowsill just so. They look
Ready for use, their black silhouette

Framed against the backdrop of the lake
And the surrounding snow-capped mountains,
But really they’re just there to look good,

Elegant, as if they could be used,
The framed suggestion of a function
In the human foreground of the scene,

Which begs the question. Have the humans
Themselves been posed just so by something
Wishing to look good to other gods?
