Little Brother, We Are Always Hungry

Writes Zeina Hashem Beck,
Who is being specific,
Not generally bland like us.

Hunger, felt, is specific.
Specific bodies feel it,
Bodies of people you know,

And your own body, itself.
So the general creeps in
From the margins of battles

To observe how hunger’s felt
By everyone, even if
Not as much by everyone.

The general is hungry
For further observations.
Down on the field of battle,

Bellies are only empty
Or recently filled. Being
Filled never lasts forever.

Another observation!
The general now exults.
We are not always hungry,

Not so that you can feel it.
However, mon general,
Observe—when you lose your breath.
