Disconnect

There’s a subtly eerie charm
To independent events
In the statistical sense.

When paired events qualify
As independent, they are
Meaningless to each other—

Knowing the outcome of one
Clarifies nothing about
The outcome of the other.

For independent events
To exist, there must be nodes
In the universal fields

Utterly disconnected
In cause and correlation,
And they seem to be fairly

Common, these lotteries, these
Fair coins, these unrelated
Happenings. You don’t like them,

Most of you, don’t like their kind
Of spookiness. You’d rather
The stars at your birth ruled you,

At least predicted something
About you, than surrender
To so much independence.
