Selfishness

The body convulses itself.
Something gliding through the thoughts, wants
To be still, read words, have ideas.
The body has other ideas.

No, there is no homunculus,
No steering self, no separate soul,
But the body is not a whole,
Unified, indivisible.

Any part of it could break down
When it was ready to break down
Or go rogue, and precious little
Other parts could do about it.

So if the thoughts have their own world,
Or several competing worlds,
That’s no threat to naturalism.
The thoughts want to be left alone.
