Was ever truly alone,
As in singular, all one,
One whole, indivisible,
It might then be best to go
With Dillard’s phrase for matter,
Matter is smooth and alone,
By which she seemed to imply
The whole material world,
Other than herself, other
Than people maybe, maybe
Other than the living world,
The whole world of mere being,
Matter, is but one, alone.
