If you asked a pebble
In a stream bed to think
Of anything greater,
Beyond its little self,
Do you think it would think
Of the canyon’s sheer cliffs,
Of the sky above them,
Of the woods by the stream,
Even of the water?
It would probably think
Of some of the many
Other pebbles it knows.
