The cat cummis, and to the mous hes ee
It would be nice if willingness
To live with little in the way
Of possessions and be happy
Kept you safe. It would be moral,
Like an Aesop’s fable retold
By a late-medieval makir.
The lush life has its risks, no doubt,
And traps await the city mouse
Who dares party in the larders.
But even for the country mouse
Contented with coarse peas and nuts,
Dwelling far from well-stocked pantries,
There are predators a-plenty,
Most more competent than moggies.
