Yegg Verses

There’s a safe, a vault, a real Fort Knox
With a trick up its security—
Despite the defenses, it’s empty.

The vault itself will tempt you, lure you—
So huge, so heavily defended.
Its emptiness exists to eat you.

You can break into it but not out,
Which is the real reason for the myth
No one’s ever broken into it—

They have. Yeh, they have. They don’t come out.
Meanwhile, within the walls and layers
Of reinforced steel, one of the wheels

You can spin if you’re willing to try
Has a secret of its own—brute force
Will never crack it, nor will genius,

But steady application, steady
Twirling of the dial will sometimes yield
A combination that is itself

A kind of treasure, the only kind
In that mausoleum of a vault.
The empty tomb isn’t quite barren,

If you can twitch the combination
That drops the pins and tumblers for you
Before the great vault swallows you whole.
