One Gill of Water from a Dark Well

If it all stopped, all of it,
No one would be left to know
Or be hungry or wonder

Whether it was good or bad,
How glorious it had been.
All of the lives that ended

That instant would be saved
From dying. Just gone at once,
The simulation shut down,

Something having pulled the plug
On this experimental
Cosmos. Or if just the Earth,

Just as well, and if swapped out
For a new one, who could tell?
