Whether or not individuals can choose
To do, or simply do and then confabulate
Their choices and their reasons, there is
Another question more rarely gets asked,
Which is whether whole societies or whole
Systems within them can make decisions,
And if they can, are those truly eluctable?
Could free will be an emergent property,
If not of bodies, then of bodies politic?
If not, then any kind of social change
Bins into either the forever impossible
Or the inevitable, about which societies
Themselves retrospectively confabulate,
Confabulation a trait not well explained.

A Trait Not Well Explained
Incomplete All the Way Down
An Inconsequential Consequence Is Still Some Kind of Consequence
It follows a curve—
In the aftermath,
Accounts are jumbled
And come from all sorts
Of people, classes,
Winners and losers,
But as time goes on
The accounts focus
More and more tightly
On the great leaders
Of tragic events,
Poetic, condensed—
And then the curve bends,
Reaching down again,
This time for stories
From the marginal,
Wayside witnesses
To the terrible
And banal movements
Of the tragedy.
Does the curve ever
Dissipate wholly
To null, forgotten?
Forgotten maybe,
But still light traces
To the infinite
Tail of consequence.
Homespun
The things you can imagine
Are almost your past but slim,
Vetted, deboned, the long odds
Against what you can imagine
Removed, so that you can see
Dreams glistening and gathered,
All the implausible cuts
Bundled together in place
As the mind’s hands are trembling
With the effort to hold them,
Just them, thin-sliced memories
To be woven in ribbons
To thread the next narrative
Of more unlikely monsters.
