Foregone

Stabbed in his bath,
Ota was said
To have pronounced
This poem at death—

If I were not
Already dead,
I would have mourned
My loss of life.

Well, more or less.
Apocryphal
As that may be,
It’s a rich thought.

You’re all born dead,
And none of you
Last past the loss
Of you to mourn.
